Do you like potluck dinners? I personally can not stand them and after hearing my story, you will think twice before excepting an invitation to your next potluck.The reason I don't like them is because I don't know by whom or how the food was prepared! My imagination runs wild and I can't get past the first dish. I used to contribute to the potluck seen, until one day I was working for the school district and the PTA decided to put together a potluck dinner. That was a great idea so I thought! I made my specialty, brought it to the potluck dinner. Many people arrived all bringing their specialty dishes dressed like they were on their way to a professional business meeting! The food looked great... it was a spread like no other. You had your choice of any kind of food better than a restaurant. I admired the beautiful dishes and helped myself to most of them.
A few days later I decided to visit the President of the PTA whom was always dressed like a princess, wearing make-up and always looked clean. I wouldn't hesitate eating what she brought, looking at her appearance she seemed vary clean! She was so nice to invite me to her house, she wanted to become friends because she said she didn't know to many people. Our kids were in the same class so she wanted to get together and let the kids play. When I arrived, I noticed the outside of her home needed a little cleaning which was not an issue for me. I went to the door, she opened the door totally excited to invite me in and to my surprise, I could not help but notice all the things lying on the floor of her living room. Yes, I noticed a path to her kitchen. On each side of the path were piles of garbage, boxes of buttons, assuming she collected buttons and paper goods as though she didn't have a trash can or liners to throw her trash in. As I walked through the path, the trash on each side of my path came to the calves of my legs! Did she have any furniture? I couldn't tell. I only see trash! I continued walking to the kitchen, thinking, I do not want to be here! As I entered the kitchen the first thing I noticed, broken greasy bike parts all over the floor. I looked at the table and there sat jars of jelly and peanut butter along with all the clutter and there were fly's stuck on the side of the jars. At this point I was trying to remember! What dish did she bring to the potluck? I just know I must of ate some of it. It wasn't long after that, I visited another lady and she had a slow cooker full of beans cooking on the table and her cat seemed to enjoy rubbing himself against the slow cooker. I sat and watched the cat for 10 minutes as she did nothing to stop the cat. So do I hate potlucks? Yes, I avoid them at all times! People know the dangers of potluck food, but continue to become excited when they are invited to one. I don’t think some people understand the dangers of potlucks. If the food is cooked with the improper handling, heat, or is left out of the refrigerater more than two hours, you are taking your chances. How many of you go to barbeques and see salads sitting on the table for a few hours? To some people this doesn’t matter, therefore you are taking your chances when you eat the food. This is dangerous for everyone, but children, pregnant women, elderly people, and persons with chronic illness are more likely to get sick from food poisoning. Do you know someone who does not wash off the cutting board with soap in between cutting their meat and then their vegetables? Do you know someone who mixes green salads and fruit salads with their hands? Do you know someone who has animals crawling on their kitchen counters and tables and think nothing of it? Okay, you may not get sick from eating their food, but you are taking a big risk! Not all food poisoning results in diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. Some types of food poisoning have different or more severe symptoms. These can include weakness, numbness, confusion, or tingling of the face, hands, and feet. So next time you are invited to a potluck dinner, beware! If you don’t know where the food came from, then you shouldn’t eat it.

Interesting History Lesson-Be sure to read the final paragraph; your understanding of it will depend on the earlier part of the content.The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England, and the English, built the U.S. Why did the English build them that way? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the re-railroad tram-ways, and that's the gauge they used.Why did 'they' use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tram-ways used the same jigs and tools that they used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing.Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts. So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (and England) for their legions. The roads have been used ever since.And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore, the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 in. is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot... So the next time you are handed a Specification/Procedure/process and wonder "What horse's ass came up with it? You may be exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses asses). End of today's lesson..

Hobo Potatoes Ingredients: 4 medium potatoes1/4 cube butterGarlic to taste1 Red Onion2 tbs. Sweet basil 1/4 teas salt 1/4 teas pepper Directions: Dice Potatoes, onions, add butter pads, garlic, salt, pepper, sweet basil. Wrap in foil, individually. Place on grill and cook approximately 30 Min.

Ann’s Fruit Pie: 1 cup flour1 cup sugar1 cup milk¾ stick butter 2 teas. Baking powder 1 Large can= (1 qt) of peaches or fruitMix: sugar, flour, baking powder, then add 1 cup of milk. Stir. Dobb (pats of butter) on bottom of pan, pour mixture over butter, add 1 qt of hot fruit on top of batter. Cook 350 degree until mixture rises and becomes golden brown.

I’m going to tell you a true story about some friends of mine and
their addiction to internet games. My friends are 50+ years and stay on their computers at home an average of 4-5 hrs playing internet games. They do this on a daily basis usually all of them on the same game site. The games are free sites, and the chances of winning money on these game sites is as rare as winning the lotto. Do you think I should be worried? We talk about children and their
Internet games and TV? There is 1.5 million people over the age of 21 playing on this one website. Do you know how many more websites like this are out there? IS THIS EPIDEMIC SPREADING TO OLDER ADULTS? Give me your comments and let us know what you think! Is this un-healthy for them?

HARDY CROPS Crops that are hardy typically include asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, garlic, kale, onions, peas, radishes, rhubarb, spinach, and turnips. Some of these vegetables, such as peas, cabbage, broccoli, radishes, and cauliflower, also are considered as fall crops and can be planted in late summer. Potatoes, beets, carrots, lettuce, and artichokes are some of the half-hardy types, which typically are followed by the hardy varieties in the garden. The most susceptible plants to cold temperatures include beans, tomatoes, corn, peppers, cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, sweet potatoes, melons, and okra. Many of these tender varieties require temperatures of at least 65°F in order to thrive.

VACATION HOT SPOTS!

CASCADIA STATE PARK While the park is quite large, there are barely two dozen campsites, making this a great spot for an intimate getaway. A pair of hiking trails give you a chance to explore the area. A .75 mile trail leads to the spectacular Soda Creek Falls. A newer trail ushers you through historic Douglas-fir trees along the South Santiam River (a good place to fish and swim). Ruts from the historic Santiam Wagon Road are visible in the park (the trail was used as a military route in the 1800s).The campground and east picnic area are open May 1-September 30.
